Asphalt is a heated mixture of sand, crushed rock and bitumen. Bitumen is a sticky, black viscous liquid (200 times more viscous than honey). It was first found naturally occurring in earthly deposits, called tar pits, then produced later as a byproduct of oil refinement. Tar was first used as an excellent sealant for boats (native Americans used it) and as a waterproof adhesive for roofing materials. Newark City, in 1870, placed large sheets of asphalt on the road in front of city hall. This road turned out to provide a solid, rain-repelling surface that easily encouraged the movement of goods and people. The asphalt pavement industry, ever since, has been in constant innovation to make this product stronger, increase its lifespan and make it more environmentally friendly. View our paving services!
